Why does a personal consultancy approach to web design matter?

The challenges of starting and managing your own website can be daunting, so finding the right person to help is the key to success.

Starting a small business is demanding. Whatever market you're in, it's not just about being good at what you do. It's about finance, marketing, sales, IT - the list goes on.

As a start-up, cost is an issue, so you'd like to do most things yourself. Realistically however, you're not going to be an expert in them all. You quickly realise you're going to need help.

You know you'll need a website and yes, there are ways to do this yourself. However, this is rarely the easy route.

A website is nothing without targeted content. It needs to aim at someone and be written accordingly. What about images and brand? What's the best way to convey your product or service offering?

An online, DIY web builder will get you a basic site, but what it says, what it aims to achieve, well that's still up to you.

Then there's the frustration of actually using these systems. "Why can't I just move this there? Why is it so hard to add a new page?" Someone, somewhere is shouting at a PC right now.

So, you replace your smashed keyboard and commit to getting paid help and again, cost becomes an issue. Involuntary eyebrow raising at an agency quote is the norm here.

The answer is of course collaboration with a reliable consultant. Finding a supplier, a freelancer, a person who's happy to become a team member, is usually a huge relief.

Trusted freelance consultants have low overheads and are happy to get involved at a 'people' level. If they've got technical, creative and marketing skills then you're on to a winner.

Businesses are made of people. Sharing the load, using someone's experience, talking things over, these are the ways to succeed.

In short, if you want affordability, expertise and a personal approach, take a step towards a slightly easier life and find yourself a freelance consultant.
